The SUV Problem
Pic of the Month

This page is devoted to the "SUV Problem." Concerns range from the safety of others on our public roads, to damage to the environment, to the hatred from others around the world caused by the United States' foreign policy whose sole purpose is to ensure our nation's unfettered access to fossil fuels.

Quotes from strange bedfellows:

"Reducing our nation's dependence on imported oil is crucial to our national energy security, now more than ever before." - U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham
"How ironic that if American car buyers want to do something truly patriotic, they have to buy Japanese to do it." - Arianna Huffington
"If everybody in the U.S. who drives an SUV drove a car instead, we could cut out Middle Eastern oil imports entirely." - Union of Concerned Scientists
"Car drivers are subsidizing SUV and pickup drivers on liability insurance." - Diane Tasaka, Farmers Insurance
"If pigs are big and popular, then we'll make pigs." - Harvey Pearce, General Motors
"It is clear our nation is reliant upon big foreign oil. More and more of our imports come from overseas." - George W. Bush
"Man, what a dorkwad." - Bart Simpson

The real tragedy is here at home. From USENET: American women are to blame for this most destructive phenoma. You see, if an American male is told just once that he is 'small', because of our culture, he is doomed to a compulsion of driving these mastadons that are ever increasing in size. One must have great sympathy for the poor guy driving alone in his big "4x4" roll-over special that is raised up high with huge, bulging, noisy tires that portrude far beyond the fender well openings. The tragedy is that it is all so unneccessary! If it weren't for the irresponsible outbursts of those American women, this great nation would be far closer to achieving energy independence. The fact that recent events in the world have done nothing to discourage this trend merely illustrates how ingrained it has become within our national psyche.
